• Conterno Barolo Colonnello Nebbiolo 2013 750ml "Terrific aromas of blackberries, walnuts, spices, bark and mushrooms. Full body, ultra-fine tannins and bright acidity. So beautiful now but be patient. This needs four or five years to come completely together. Wow. What class and precision define this wine. The aromas show such subtle complexity and beauty. Full and tight with a solid core of fruit. Polished tannins to the maximum" James Suckling
  • Brokenwood Graveyard Shiraz 2014

A really focused nose with deep black cherry and blackberry fruits in abundance, super pure, the oak adds bright spicy appeal. The palate has a sense of depth and focused concentration in a mid-weight frame that cuts to the core of Hunter Shiraz, tannins are juicy and ripe, really sweeping, gathers pace and builds smoothly as it goes. Great wine. Best from 2020.
  • Yalumba Octavius Shiraz 2012 750ml "Full depth purple red in colour, it opens with aromas of fresh, ripe raspberry and blueberry, then powdery exotic spices, violets, wildflowers and black cherries. It has a plump and harmonious palate - a brooding, dense, dark mouthful of delicious Barossa Shiraz. A supple beauty that isn’t about aggressive power. The flavour is tremendously long, with a rush of energy that will carry this wine for many years. Try with lamb shoulder and all the trimmings."

  • Hentley Farm Beauty Shiraz 2015 750ml "Grown on the coolest block on the property and co-fermented with a touch of Viognier, the Beauty displays complex lifted aromatics, along with the softness and subtlety befitting a wine of this name. Primary reds fruits, white florals and tropical stone fruits leap out of the glass. Red and blue fruits also lead the palate with a strong spice element providing the complexity, a unique blend of blueberry and green peppercorn evidence of the cooler creek level breezes. Soft subtle tannin provide focus through the middle before opening up to broad savoury finish. Elegant and complex."

  • Penfolds RWT Shiraz 2015 750ml A threatened crimson rim encroached upon by a deep, dark core. Freshly sliced panforte – date, fig, with dried and fresh blue fruits that become more apparent upon sitting. Immediately recognisable cedary French oak - synergised by the liberation of sweet Moroccan spices and a propulsion of dried roasted almond. Conceded – can’t ‘smell’ acidity, so maybe such a perception is created via scents of rhubarb and cranberry? This year more ostensibly textural than other red wines in The Penfolds Collection. Yet still supersaturated with red and blue-berried fruits and liquorices (both red and black). Proudly extolling a formidable Barossa structure – layered/laminated, rather than thick/blocky … (aka filo-pastry or) ‘filo-lated’?! Tannins – fine/emery/sleek/polished – all there to convey, not to confront. Lingers, ever so pleasantly. Once again spoilt by the generosity on the palate of what the Barossa does best
  • Penfolds Grange Shiraz 2014 750ml Nose An indulged aromatic meander: • First in the kitchen – umami expressed primarily via wafts of shiitake mushroom stock, hoisin and XO sauce … enhancing scents of dry-aged beef and game meats. • Then outside – olive-leaf, cardamom, sage and thyme … “a stroll through a South Australian olive grove” … saltbush, acacia, dried and dusty bracken. • To the cellar – fresh and familial lifted formic and barrel-ferment nuances. Followed by a return to reality: • Quite simply, an unmistakable youthful ‘Grange’ nose. Awakened primary fruits and stylish oak interlocked and indistinguishable. As expected. Palate Savoury, not fruity. Tastes/flavours remind of slow cooked beef ragout, chicken liver game terrine. Red liquorice also apparent. Integrated oak – spicy, almost ‘non-American’ oak … but it is. As it always is. A core of 100% new Quercus alba. Poised yet powerful. A balanced, tightly-knit and woven structural ‘tapestry’. Not to be constrained by dimension or frame. Tannins with attitude! Nonetheless respectful. Type? Slatey tannins … alluvial, silty (certainly not muddy!). Long and lingering – tactile impressions indistinguishably and slowly fuse/merge into an aftertaste memory. Until the next sip! A Grange to create new friends – this 2014 offering a subtly different structural mosaic; different tone and timbre.
  • Penfolds Grange 2013
    PALATE DESCRIPTION
Colour Opaque black core, dark red rim. Nose An aromatic assault / surge / eruption of soy, hoisin, balsamic reduction… coiled around a core of kirsch and fresh raspberry. This propulsion is crammed with tell-tale barrel ferment, V.A. and formic Grange markers – all in balance, all respectful of fruit and oak. And yet, so ‘classy’ – a brightness, a sheen, a gloss, a raciness – belying both age and upbringing (élevage). Palate Formidable No gaps, a densely-packed structural continuum. Not huge, not massive, yet taut, muscular, feisty. A black palimpsest - black fruits, black liquorice,  black pudding, black fig, black cardamom.... Granitic chewy tannins linger and coat; oak all but fully concealed, submerged beneath a tannin/oak/acid/flavour tsunami.
    WINEMAKER QUOTES
“Six decades after the release of OUR favourite Grange, the 60 year-old 1953 Grange, this 2013 flexes, prances, twitches… Pressure is on! What’s the measure of this four and a half year old?” “2013 – Undoubtedly will soon be universally proclaimed to be a classic ‘Penfolds vintage’ … and indeed over time certified a classic ‘Grange vintage’!” “Not unlike the 2008 Grange – á la style / weight / disposition / cellarability.” - Peter Gago, Penfolds Chief Winemaker
  • Jim Barry The Armagh Shiraz 2013 750ML "Deep colour. Intense elderberry, blackberry aromas with very attractive toasty, grilled nut, roasted chestnut comeplety. Concentrated and elemental with intense elderberry, mulberry, espresso, liquorice fruits; all balanced with fine plentiful graphite tannins and superb toasty, mocha notes. Finishes al dente firm but long and minerally, A very expressive and expansive wine. Destined to be a classic. Leave for a decade at least."
