• Penfolds RWT Shiraz 2015 750ml A threatened crimson rim encroached upon by a deep, dark core. Freshly sliced panforte – date, fig, with dried and fresh blue fruits that become more apparent upon sitting. Immediately recognisable cedary French oak - synergised by the liberation of sweet Moroccan spices and a propulsion of dried roasted almond. Conceded – can’t ‘smell’ acidity, so maybe such a perception is created via scents of rhubarb and cranberry? This year more ostensibly textural than other red wines in The Penfolds Collection. Yet still supersaturated with red and blue-berried fruits and liquorices (both red and black). Proudly extolling a formidable Barossa structure – layered/laminated, rather than thick/blocky … (aka filo-pastry or) ‘filo-lated’?! Tannins – fine/emery/sleek/polished – all there to convey, not to confront. Lingers, ever so pleasantly. Once again spoilt by the generosity on the palate of what the Barossa does best
  • Hentley Farm The Beast Shiraz 2014 750ml "As the name suggests, this wine is indeed big and powerful, but it's elegant and classy too. Heady notes of violets, red berries, smoked meat, white pepper and licorice are entwined with tightly wound, fine-grained tannins. One for the cellar. Drink 2019–2032"

  • Catena Zapata Mundus Bacillus Terrae Malbec 2011 750ml "Aromas of blackberries, violets, and vanilla give way to a powerful and deep wine with flavors of black and red fruits alongside of lavendar, wood and minerals. Remarkable concentration and finely-grained tannins stand with great acidity."
  • Catena Zapata White Bones Adrianna Chardonnay 2013 750ml "The Montrachet of Argentina with incredible dried fruit, stones and limestone. Full body, layered and powerful. • Gaja Sperss 2011 750ml Ruby red color. Aromas are dark, pure and very focused fruit with classic hints of tar, licorice, and a touch of truffles. On the palate, Sperss displays the austere character typical of Serralunga terroir: deep structure and lots of ripe tannins. Dense, massive yet seamless, the beautifully integrated wine possesses low acidity as well as a terrific finish.
  • Gaja Conteisa 2011 750ml This is wonderfully succulent and refined with blueberry, lavender and sandalwood aromas and flavors. Botanical, with some juniper. Medium body with integrated, polished tannins and a long finish. Very pretty. The salted-meat undertones on the palate make it very savory. Drink or hold. James Suckling "The 2011 Langhe Nebbiolo Conteisa is an irresistible wine with enormous depth, beauty and penetration. It sweeps over the palate in opulent waves with dark fruit, spice, leather and grilled herbs. It also shows a distinct balsam personality with cola and dried violets that give the wine a beautiful sense of aromatic lift and buoyancy. Langhe Conteisa is made with Nebbiolo (and a tiny part Barbera) from the Cerequio vineyard in La Morra. The 2011 vintage is slightly broader than past vintages, but this wine promises a long drinking evolution regardless"
  • Gaja Darmagi 2012 750ml The child of a ripe vintage, the ’12 Darmagi explodes from the glass in a profusion of brambly, juicy red and blue fruit that’s layered atop sun-warmed earth, cigar wrapper, baking spices and mocha. Opulent yet supple, this wine balances its chewy tannins with fresh acidity as it builds to a long, caressing finish. An elegant blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, this wine belies its name Darmagi, which means "what a pity" in the Piemontese dialect. After fermenting in temperature-controlled stainless steel for about two weeks, this wine ages for 6-8 months in barrique, followed by a year in oak casks. Concentrated on the nose and palate, with expansive and complex layers, this beautiful wine marries the distinct terroir of Piemonte with the engaging personalities of its international contributors.

  • Gaja Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2012 750ml "The centerpiece of the portfolio, Gaja Barbaresco is a testament to the Gaja family's historic commitment to the appellation and its belief that Barbaresco stands proudly with the great growing regions of the world. The Gaja winery stopped sourcing fruit from other growers in 1961 in order to ensure the utmost quality in its wines. In all, Gaja Barbaresco is produced using grapes grown in 14 vineyards in the village of Barbaresco. Full to medium in weight, it's rather closed and withdrawn, holding back its substantial weight of pure dark fruit beneath some seasoned, smoked oyster-like oak. Framed by a firm but very pliant extract, its lingering core of palate-staining flavour finishes with meaty, savoury elements and a hint of minerally saltiness."

An elegant style with fresh red currant, red cherry flavours, fine sinewy, al-dente textures and underlying sweet fruit, tobacco, chinotto notes. Finishes chalky dry, minerally and long. • Penfolds St Henri Shiraz 2006 750ml "The color is a deep dark red. On the nose, the wine shows fragrant scents of praline and dark chocolate immediately conveyed, followed by blackberry, powdered violet & lavender (talc). Beneath, fresh green tobacco and lively spices, cold meats / pan juices fuse together. The result: a youthful, benchmark St Henri aromatic package. The entry on the mouth shows a medium-bodied and relatively 'elegant' feel. A palate stand-off / divide - Kirsch and dark fruits versus pomegranate / cranberry & dessicated Chinese plums. Cold meat flavours - corned beef or poached silverside? Powdery savoury tannins... Polished. Serve with pork, cauliflower cream, confit turnip, morcilla, fennel seed and spiced quince puree."
  • Penfolds RWT Shiraz 2014 750ml "Very deep, bright purple/red colour. Fresh and clean, less-oaky than Magill Estate this year. The palate is wonderfully fleshy, rich and supple, laden with ripe tannins, the texture is seductive and the palate is seamless and long and marvellously fine. Discreet notes of chocolate, mocha, coffee, spices and earth as well as red fruits, but it's all so well harmonised: nothing stands out" Huon Hooke
  • Penfolds Magill Estate Shiraz 2011 750ml True to this cool season, a pretty and elegant Magill Estate of lively acidity, tangy berry fruits and savoury accents. It soaks up 100% new oak effortlessly (65/35% French/American), making space for flavours of licorice, black olives, pepper and exotic spice. No great Magill, but certainly an engaging and commendable result.

  • Penfolds Grange Shiraz 2011 750ml Deep, rich red colour with purple tints. The bouquet starts off very oaky, and with a lot of swirling becomes richly mocha-like, peppery and dark chocolaty. Lindt dark chocolate with raspberries, to be precise. The wine is dense and fleshy in the mouth, with plenty of extract. It seems a shade lighter in body than usual, but still powerful. It's nicely balanced and smoothly-textured. The richness, density and harmony are very good indeed. Not a great Grange but superb, and surprisingly so for the disastrously wet year. And it can be enjoyed already. (Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale & Magill. No cabernet this year; it's 100% shiraz)
  • Penfolds Grange Shiraz 2012 750ml Deep colour. Intense paneforte, dark chocolate, dark blackberry aromas with lifted roasted chestnut, mocha, English-toffee aromas and notes of sweet tobacco, dried roses, shellac and frankincense. Superbly concentrated wine with wonderful presence, structure and density. Plush in scale yet possessing lovely energy and structure...Dense, expansive, rich and voluminous. All in perfect symmetry. A transcendent and powerfully expressive Grange harking back to Max Schubert s original blueprint. Its aromatic complexity, generosity and suppleness is reminiscent of the early 1960s. This has to be in the pantheon of all-time great vintages. Unbelievably good to drink now; a great indication of its lasting quality. Leave it for a minimum of ten years, if you can. 2026-2080.

Medium to full-bodied, taut and very spicy in the mouth, it shows touches of sandalwood and Chinese five spice complementing the layers of dark fruit flavors. It is framed by firm, grainy tannins and a refreshing acid line before finishing very long with aniseed and lingering blackberry preserves notes. This is clearly a wonderfully opulent and a magic vintage for this label.
  • Penfolds Grange Shiraz 2009 750ml Very deep red with a good purple rim; the bouquet loaded with chocolate, mocha and cocoa-powder aromas, and a hint of raisin. The wine is full-bodied and grippy, the tannins less well-tamed than in the 2010 or '08 Granges, and the wine is all-round slightly rustic and less cultured. It certainly has depth and weight and concentration, but is slightly uneven across the palate. A good Grange, merely. (2% cabernet sauvignon)
  • Penfolds Grange Shiraz 2004 750ml Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2004 Penfolds Grange offers a profound nose of black cherries, creme de cassis licorice and dark chocolate with suggestions of cedar and violets. Full bodied, ripe and voluptuous in the mouth, the generous flesh is well supported by medium to high acidity and a firm level of finely grained tannins, finishing long. It's seductively approachable now but has much more to give and should drink best 2015 to 2035+.
  • Penfolds Grange Shiraz 2005 750ml Deep red purple, good colour for age. Sweet blackberry and blueberry aromas; oak not too dominant, seems almost fruit driven for a Grange. Chocolate, vanilla, cooked fruits, some coconut emerged with airing. Palate is balanced and not all that tannic, smooth and remarkably approachable. Youthful in mouth; remarkably fresh and charming fruit flavours; ideal ripeness. Tannins are finer and more powdery than expected, and subtly run the length of the palate. Good long aftertaste. An elegant, finer, more subtle vintage of Grange.
  • Penfolds Grange Shiraz 2006 750ml Deep red, slight purple. Rich and viscous in the glass. Quite fine and elegant, roasted meats and licorice/aniseed flavours, some plummy/pruney aspects. Very elegant and long, smooth and well modulated. Needs many years before the full pay-off. A top-level Grange.
